Ask a finance team and an operations team for the same number and you will often get two different answers, both defensible, both sourced from the same system. This is rarely a technology failure. It is a definition failure, and no amount of dashboard polish will fix it.

The semantic layer is the actual product

SAP Datasphere is positioned as a data platform, but the part that changes outcomes is the business semantic layer: a governed place where an entity like net revenue or active customer is defined once, with lineage back to the source. Everything downstream inherits that definition.

This matters because the alternative is definitional drift. Each team builds its own extract, applies its own filters, and over time the organisation loses the ability to reconcile its own numbers. The cost shows up as meetings spent arguing about whose figure is correct.

Governed KPI tiles built on a shared semantic layer

Where SAP Analytics Cloud fits

SAP Analytics Cloud sits on top as the consumption layer, covering dashboards, planning and predictive scenarios. Its advantage in an SAP landscape is that planning and reporting share the same governed model, so a planning assumption and an actuals report are not quietly built on different definitions.

The practical benefit is a shorter path from a question to a defensible answer. When the semantic layer is trusted, analysts stop rebuilding logic and start interrogating it.

Getting the sequence right

  • Agree the small number of measures that genuinely drive decisions, and define them precisely.
  • Model those measures once in the semantic layer, with clear ownership for each definition.
  • Build the consumption layer on top, and resist recreating logic inside individual dashboards.
  • Retire the shadow spreadsheets deliberately, rather than hoping they fall out of use.

A dashboard nobody trusts is more expensive than no dashboard at all, because it generates work without resolving anything.

None of this requires replacing your reporting estate in one move. It requires picking the handful of numbers the business argues about most, settling them properly, and letting the credibility of that work earn the next increment.
